Why research reforestation organizations

01

Setting High standards

Tree-growing projects and initiatives continue to increase worldwide. This research characterizes how groups that are mobilizing finances and resources for large networks of projects at scale – i.e., “intermediary organizations” – recognize scientific guidelines, provide safeguards for common pitfalls of restoration, and commit to monitoring & transparency.

02

Advancing Transparency

Funding for reforestation needs to result in the best outcomes for the biodiversity, climate, and people of this planet. We reviewed the practices of reforestation organizations based on a combination of a survey completed by many organizations and web-based information when organizations did not complete our survey.

03

Inspiring Collective Improvement

This resource provides the reforestation sector with information about what is known about the characteristics, practices, and transparency of tree-planting organizations, in order to identify organizations with exceptional standards in key areas of practice based on scientific research.

Our approach is focused on transparency

Our database is derived primarily from each organization's self-reporting of practices and standards that they commit to observing. We reviewed reforestation organizations based on a combination of a survey completed by many organizations and web-based information when organizations did not complete our survey. We do not make direct endorsements of particular organizations; however, our evaluations, backed by scientific literature on best practices, provide valuable indicators of which organizations are likely to lead successful reforestation campaigns in the years ahead.

Many organizations emphasize flexible standards with their partners to encourage programs that adapt to the local needs of projects, where a strict-top down approach would obstruct initiating reforestation in restoration work in areas where it is urgently needed. For these reasons and more, we encourage users to select their own priority criteria using search filters on the Explore page to find organizations that match their own values, and use the project database to familiarize themselves with specific projects when reviewing organizations.

Understand the data and learn how to use it

Our study focuses on “intermediary” organizations, which we broadly define as groups involved in the tree growing movement that lead programs and large-scale initiatives aimed at supporting networks of smaller local implementing groups across broad geographic areas; some also implement their own local projects.
